HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are a lot of ways people can get involved. Some possible ideas include:

- working for an agency that helps wildlife (local fish and game departments)
- volunteering at local or state parks
- educating people on wildlife
- donating money to wildlife preservation and conservation organizations (national, state, and local chapters exist)
- joining a sportsman's club (i.e. pheasants forever, ducks unlimited, quail forever, etc.)
- donating money to sportsman's clubs
- watching what you yourself do and how it impacts wildlife

You can also get involved by planting trees and flowers. But those are plants, not animals! Plants are essential for animals. They provide food, shelter and even a place to just hide from people. Even an apartment dweller can put out flower pots on the window ledge with Lantana to attract butterflies. The butterflies will lay eggs and develop caterpillars which get eaten by birds and other insects. The butterfly larvae may not be on your plants, but the food will help the wildlife.

Cut down on the use of pesticide and poisons on the plants. Those pesticides are killing the wildlife, which needs conservation. They not only destroy the animal that come to your plant, but wash and spread out into surrounding ares with wind and rain, accumulating in the environment. Most animals and insect actually benefit the plants, so encourage rather than discourage them. If there is a problem, use natural or safe means of control; most caterpillars can be physically removed.

Reducing trash and removing it will promote wildlife conservation in several ways. It gets the rubbish that is toxic to many animals out of the environment. Plastic bags blow into the water and can end up choking sea turtles, ask a veterinarian about what happen if an animal get blocked up from eating used pantie hose that was put with the scraps of the Sunday Supper. Bottles also promote mosquitoes, not the type of wildlife most want to conserve or encourage, which spread animal diseases as well as humans. Cleaning up the environment is something everybody can do that helps wildlife conservation.
